Three Seminars on the Psychoanalysis of Everyday Symptoms in Couple Relationships

This three-part seminar series explores the unconscious dynamics that shape love, desire, and intimacy in couple relationships. Drawing on Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the seminars address fundamental questions such as:

  • Why do love relationships change over time?

  • Why do people cheat?

  • What are the dynamics of eroticism and the sexual act?

Life pressures and emotional tensions often affect how partners perceive themselves and each other, leading to shifts in intimacy, desire, and erotic connection. When these changes remain unconscious, relationships may deteriorate or collapse. Freud and Lacan described these invisible forces as the unconscious—structures that shape behavior, language, meaning, and experience in matters of love.

Lacanian psychoanalyst Petros Patounas will examine these hidden dynamics, showing how increased awareness can open new possibilities for understanding and transforming relationships.

Each seminar combines theoretical analysis with practical references and clinical-style examples. Topics include Freud’s and Lacan’s theories of primary and secondary narcissism; transformations of desire and passion over time; shifts in how we interpret the other; and the distinction between real love and love for an unconscious ideal.
